Mumbai launches exclusive women driven autos

autosladiesMumbai: If you happen to visit Mumbai, do not be surprised to see salmon orange coloured autorickshaws driven by women drivers dressed in pink uniforms. The Regional Transport Offices of Mumbai/Navi Mumbai have now started exclusive autos for women commuters in the city.
This initiative has given employment to hundreds of women from Thane and Navi Mumbai while at the same time has paved way for a safe commute for women.
The state transport authority has granted 548 permits to women from across Maharashtra through a lottery process organized at the Andheri RTO during January 2016. These autorickshaws will be driven by women and will mostly cater to women commuters.
“There will be many salmon orange coloured special autos plying in the city soon. The objective of the service is to provide self-employment to women and also make commute safer for women,” said deputy RTO Navi Mumbai Sanjay Dole.
The autos will be driven only by women. Men passengers can be allowed. “One auto can provide employment to two to three women, who can drive the auto in shifts,” he said.
